Thank you Siobhan, Kitty, Ramona, and Troy for an informative and delightful presentation!
View the presentation and join Wampanoag Nation Singers and Dancers (WNSD) to learn about their origins from the founding mothers and fathers of WNSD. They discuss the evolution of their performance, the diverse venues and audiences they have worked with, and the navigation of interactive performances with large groups. WNSD also describes their inter-tribal relationships over the years, and how songs and dances have unified their communities. Additionally, they share a song and explain how songs help us navigate challenging times and support us in every aspect of our lives.
Note: Pinewoods Camp commits to uplifting Indigenous voices and educating ourselves and our community about our Indigenous neighbors, past and present. This program is provided by a grant from the Mass Cultural Council as well as the Bourne, Kingston, and Plymouth Local Cultural Councils and the Herring Pond Wampanoag Cultural Council.
Bio
The Wampanoag Nation Singers and Dancers are a group of musicians, educators, and artisans from the tribal communities of Mashpee, Aquinnah, and Herring Pond. Their performances of eastern social songs and dances have both educated and entertained audiences of all ages in museums, schools, and various multicultural events. They encourage audience participation and prefer to dance with the people instead of for the people. Dancers dress in traditional clothing and share their language and history while educating through Native dance and music. During the WNSD’s program, audiences are educated about their vibrant culture and spreading the message that “We’re still here.”
